Food, Glorious Food! The food board game for ESL

Food, Glorious Food!  The food board game for ESL

This board game is great for creating culinary conversation. The download includes the board and 20 vocabulary cards (3 sheets in total).

Cut out the vocab cards and place in a pile (face down) next to the board.

Students throw the die, work their way around the board and answer the questions.   When they land on a ‘cooking verb’ square they must pick up a card and either mime the verb for the other students to guess, or use the verb in a sentence that demonstrates understanding i.e. “She grates the cheese” and not “She grates the milk.”

This game is okay for a strong elementary group and it’s important that they are at least familiar with the cooking verbs.  I usually play in groups of 4 or 5.

This vocabulary building wordsearch is great for Halloween lessons.  It contains 13 synonyms for ‘frightening’, helping students to tell truly terrifying tales! Some of the vocabulary is quite advanced but is fine for a dictionary skills lesson for lower level students. Includes answer sheet.

My Family Worksheet

My Family Worksheet

A simple worksheet for beginners to identify members of the family.  Great gap-fill activity for a lesson or as homework.  It’s also a good follow-on if you’ve been teaching appearances.  Ask the students to describe people e.g. “Her mother has grey hair.”

I use this as a model for students to create their own family trees and to write sentences about them.  Suitable for teenagers and adults.

Get that job! The job interview board game

Get that job!  The job interview board game

This board game is great for practicing typical job interview questions. The download includes the board and 20 vocabulary cards (3 sheets in total).

Cut out the vocab cards and place in a pile (face down) next to the board.

Students throw the die, work their way around the board and answer the questions.  I always ask the students to think of a job they’d like to apply for before starting so that they give specific answers and avoid general responses.  When they land on a ‘vocab card’ square they must pick up a card and either give the definition of the word or use it in a job application related sentence.

Some of the vocabulary is quite challenging so check understanding of key words and phrases before starting.  The game was designed for upper-intermediate / advanced students but I’ve also used it in intermediate classes successfully.  I usually play in groups of 4.

Hope you have some fun with this!  As always, tell us what you think Contact us!

Phonetic Chart – Vowels & Diphthongs

Phonetic Chart – Vowels & Diphthongs

For all you EFL teachers out there!  A good chart is hard to find – too boring or too distracting in my experience.  I’ve tried to strike a balance between functional and attractive.  After years of teaching I still think twice about some of the symbols so I thought a simple illustration to prompt the sound would be useful to students and teachers alike.

I hope this is useful.  Any comments would be much appreciated Contact us!

Holiday Board Game

A3 Holiday Board Game

Board game for intermediate English students.  This tried and tested activity is great for creating conversation and includes lots of key topic vocabulary + a range of question structures.

All you need is a copy of the board for each group (I recommend groups of 4 or 5 but it’s very flexible), 1 die per group and a counter for each student.  Although this game is designed to be A3 size it is usable when reduced to A4.
